Our Journey: From Tragedy to Sanctuary

Furrever Friends Retreat was born from heartbreak, but built on hope.

When we moved here in late 2019, a small feral colony lived near the edge of our road. They were quiet, overlooked neighbors. But in October 2020, tragedy struck when our own beloved cat, Penny, fell ill after ingesting antifreeze set out in the area. Losing Penny was devastating. In that dark moment, we made a promise: we would turn our grief into action and protect these vulnerable outdoor cats from harm.

We partnered with our kind neighbor, Terressa, who was doing everything she could to feed the colony on her own. We discovered the cats had been left behind when a nearby farmette was vacated. They had no shelter, no medical care, and were forced to forage off the frozen ground in harsh winter weather.

Together with Forever Love Rescue, we brought in warm shelters and launched a complete Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) project. When we trapped Whiskers, we reached a major milestone: 100% of the original colony was officially vaccinated, fixed, and ear-tipped. They were finally safe, healthy, and protected.

Bringing the Colony Home

When Terressa passed away in July 2023 and her property went up for sale, the cats faced an uncertain future once again. We refused to let them be displaced or left behind.

We started clicker training the cats at morning and evening mealtimes, gradually teaching them that our yard was a place of safety and abundance. Step by step, we guided them across the property boundary. By the winter of 2023, every single cat had safely made the transition to our land.

Our initial setup was simple, built from wooden pallets, bricks, and basic cat houses. It was cold and damp that first winter, but the cats had full bellies, cozy straw, and each other.

The Dream Built Real

By the fall of 2024, thanks to relentless effort and community support, we built the sanctuary the cats enjoy today: a custom, weather-tight retreat complete with insulated condos, soft beds, overhead lighting, fresh running water fountains, climbing trees, and plenty of toys.

Today, Furrever Friends Retreat is a thriving outdoor haven where 14 resident cats live out their lives in peace, comfort, and dignity. It stands as a living tribute to Penny, a memorial to Terressa, and a testament to what a caring community can achieve together.
